Armadillidium depressum
Keeping parameters:
- Temperature: 18–24 °C
- Humidity: moderate
- Ventilation/air circulation: medium to high
- Difficulty level: easy
The isopods are sold in groups of 10. Armadillidium depressum is a robust European pill woodlouse species characterized by its strongly arched, broad body and its gray-brown to dark marbled coloration. Also characteristic is its pronounced rolling behavior, which effectively protects it from dehydration. Due to its size and calm behavior, it is one of the popular beginner species in the hobby.
These animals are from our own breeding. Originally, these isopods come from Western Europe. When purchased, the isopods are shipped in mixed age and size stages to ensure an optimal start for a stable breeding colony.
The isopods feed on various forest materials such as decaying wood and leaf litter. In addition, supplementary feeds such as calcium (e.g., cuttlebone or limestone) and protein should be offered as part of a balanced diet. Various vegetables are also readily accepted. Vegetables from the onion family (garlic, leek, onions) should be avoided, as well as iceberg lettuce.
A well-ventilated terrarium with clear moist and drier areas (humidity gradient) supports stable keeping and good reproduction. Waterlogging should be avoided, while a constant calcium supply promotes shell development.
