The isopods are sold in groups of 10. Proporcellio vulcanius is a species of land isopod rarely kept as a hobby. It is characterized by its robust, elongated-oval body and mostly dark grey to brownish coloration. The animals generally appear sturdily built and exhibit typical ground-oriented behavior with good adaptability to richly structured substrates.
These animals are from our own breeding. Originally, these isopods come from Southern Italy. When purchased, the isopods are shipped in mixed age and size stages to ensure an optimal start for a stable breeding colony.
The isopods feed on various forest materials such as decaying wood and leaf litter. Additionally, supplementary foods such as calcium (e.g., cuttlebone or limestone) and protein should be offered as part of a balanced diet. Various vegetables are also readily accepted. Vegetables from the onion family (garlic, leeks, onions) should be avoided, as should iceberg lettuce.
A well-structured terrarium with moist and drier areas (humidity gradient) supports stable keeping and successful reproduction. Waterlogging should be avoided, while constant air circulation promotes the animals' health.
