Armadillidium germanicum
Keeping parameters:
- Temperature: 18–24 °C
- Humidity: moderate
- Ventilation/Air circulation: medium to high
- Difficulty: easy-medium
The isopods are sold in groups of 10. Armadillidium germanicum is a European species of pill bug, characterized by its robust, heavily armored body and its predominantly grey-brown to slightly marbled coloration. It is considered an adaptable, classic "woodlouse" and exhibits a typical rolling-up behavior (volvency) which effectively protects it from dehydration.
These animals are from our own breeding stock. When purchased, the isopods are shipped in mixed age and size stages to ensure an optimal start for a successful breeding colony.
The isopods feed on various forest materials such as rotten wood and leaf litter. Additionally, supplementary feeds such as calcium (e.g., limestone or cuttlefish bone) and proteins should be offered as part of a balanced diet. Various vegetables are also readily accepted. Vegetables from the onion family (garlic, leeks, onions) should be avoided, as should iceberg lettuce.
A well-ventilated terrarium with clear moist and drier areas (humidity gradient) supports stable keeping and good reproduction. Waterlogging should be avoided, while a constant calcium supply is important for healthy shell development.
