Armadillidium granulatum
Keeping Parameters:
- Temperature: 20–28 °C
- Humidity: moderate
- Ventilation/Air Circulation: medium to high
- Difficulty: easy-medium
The isopods are sold in groups of 10. Armadillidium granulatum is a robust Mediterranean pill woodlouse species, characterized by its heavily textured, granular-looking carapace and variable grey-brown to slightly yellowish coloration. It is considered very adaptable and is a popular species in the hobby due to its resilience.
These animals are from our own breeding stock. Originally, these isopods come from Spain. When purchased, the isopods are shipped in mixed age and size stages to ensure an optimal start for a stable breeding colony.
The isopods feed on various forest materials such as rotten wood and leaf litter. Additionally, supplementary feeds such as calcium (e.g., cuttlebone or limestone) and proteins should be offered as part of a balanced diet. Various vegetables are also readily accepted. Vegetables from the onion family (garlic, leek, onions) should be avoided, as well as iceberg lettuce.
A well-ventilated terrarium with moist and drier areas (humidity gradient) supports stable keeping and good reproduction. Waterlogging should be avoided, while a constant calcium supply promotes carapace development.
