Armadillidium ruffoi
Keeping Parameters:
- Temperature: 18–24 °C
- Humidity: moderate
- Ventilation/Air Circulation: medium to high
- Difficulty: medium
The isopods are sold in groups of 10. Armadillidium ruffoi is a European species of pill bug, characterized by its robust, heavily armored body and typically gray-brown to slightly marbled coloration. Like other Armadillidium species, it exhibits a distinct rolling behavior (volvation), which serves as effective protection against desiccation and predators.
These animals are from our own breeding. When purchased, the isopods are shipped in mixed age and size stages to ensure an optimal start for a stable breeding colony.
The isopods feed on various forest materials such as decaying wood and leaf litter. In addition, supplementary feeds such as calcium (e.g., cuttlebone or limestone) and protein should be offered as part of a balanced diet. Various vegetables are also readily accepted. Vegetables from the onion family (garlic, leeks, onions) should be avoided, as should iceberg lettuce.
A well-structured terrarium with clear moist and drier areas (humidity gradient) supports stable keeping and good reproduction. Waterlogging should be avoided, while a constant calcium supply promotes carapace development.
