Armadillo officinalis "Dalmatian"
Keeping parameters:
- Temperature: 20–28 °C
- Humidity: moderate
- Ventilation/Air circulation: high
- Difficulty level: easy-medium
The isopods are sold in groups of 10. Armadillo officinalis 'Dalmatian' is a particularly attractive color morph of Armadillo officinalis, characterized by its light base color with dark speckling. The high-contrast pattern is reminiscent of a Dalmatian's coat and makes this morph a real eye-catcher in the terrarium. Characteristic of Armadillo officinalis is also its perfect ability to roll up and its strongly armored body.
These animals are from our own breeding. Originally, these isopods come from the Mediterranean region. When purchased, the isopods are shipped in mixed age and size stages to ensure an optimal start for a successful breeding colony.
The isopods feed on various forest materials such as rotten wood and leaf litter. In addition, supplementary feeds such as calcium (e.g. limestone or cuttlebone) and protein should be offered as part of a balanced diet. Various vegetables are also readily accepted. Vegetables from the onion family (garlic, leeks, onions) should be avoided, as should iceberg lettuce.
A well-ventilated terrarium with moister and drier areas supports successful keeping and breeding. Waterlogging should be avoided. Particularly important for this species are calcium-rich areas and good air circulation.
