Carabillo martinicensis
Keeping parameters:
- Temperature: 22–26 °C
- Humidity: high
- Ventilation/air circulation: medium
- Difficulty level: medium to challenging
The isopods are sold in groups of 10. Carabillo martinicensis (formerly Cubaris sp. “Salmon”) is a rare, very attractive species of pill bug, characterized by its salmon-colored to slightly rosy-orange basic coloration. Its compact body and typical Cubaris behavior (rather calm, hidden, ground-oriented) make it a sought-after specialty species in the hobby.
These animals are from our own breeding stock. Originally, these isopods come from Central and South America. When purchased, the isopods are shipped in mixed age and size stages to ensure an optimal start for a successful breeding colony.
The isopods feed on various forest materials such as rotten wood and leaf litter. In addition, supplementary feed such as calcium (e.g., cuttlebone or limestone) and proteins should be offered as part of a balanced diet. Various vegetables are also readily accepted. Vegetables from the onion family (garlic, leeks, onions) should be avoided, as should iceberg lettuce.
A constantly moist but well-ventilated terrarium with clear moist and dry areas is crucial for successful keeping. Waterlogging should be avoided at all costs.
